Vacation Rental Fire Pit Ban (Ordinance 2025-01)
As of February 2025, the Village of Ruidoso prohibits fire pits and all open flames at short-term rental properties at all times, regardless of the current fire restriction level. This applies year-round to all vacation rentals, cabins, and Airbnbs within village limits.
What this means for guests:
- No fire pits at your rental property, even in winter
- No campfires on the rental property
- Propane and charcoal grills/smokers are still allowed for cooking
- Indoor fireplaces (where provided) are still allowed
Properties found in violation face fines, permit suspension, or revocation.

Fire Restriction Stages Explained
Lincoln National Forest uses a staged restriction system. The current stage is set by the Forest Service based on fire danger conditions including temperature, wind, humidity, and fuel moisture.
| Activity | No Restrictions | Stage 1 | Stage 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campfires | Designated areas | Developed campgrounds only | Not allowed |
| Fire Pits | With cleared area | Developed sites only | Not allowed |

| Propane Grills | Allowed | Allowed (cleared area) | On/off valve, cleared area |
| Smoking | Use caution | Enclosed areas only | Indoors/vehicles only |
| Fireworks | Never allowed | Never allowed | Never allowed |
When Are Fire Restrictions Typically in Effect?
High Risk: March to June
Dry winds, low humidity, and dormant vegetation create peak fire danger. Stage 1 or Stage 2 restrictions are common. The 2024 South Fork and Salt fires started in June.
Lower Risk: July to October
Monsoon rains typically begin in mid-July, bringing moisture that reduces fire danger. Restrictions often ease or are lifted during this period, though drought years are exceptions.
Winter: November to February
Snow and cold temperatures keep fire danger low. Restrictions are rarely in effect. This is the safest time for campfires and fire pits.
Always Check Before You Go
Conditions change rapidly in the mountains. This page updates every 30 minutes, but always confirm with official sources before building any fire.
Penalties for Violating Fire Restrictions
Violating fire restrictions on National Forest land is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $5,000 and/or 6 months in jail. After the devastating 2024 fires that destroyed hundreds of homes in Ruidoso, enforcement is strict and the community takes fire safety very seriously. When in doubt, don't burn.
