Best Things to Do in Ruidoso with Kids: A Family Guide

I get asked this one a lot, especially from families driving up from El Paso or the Midland-Odessa area: "Is Ruidoso actually good for kids?" My answer is always the same: yes, but you have to know where to go. The mountain village thing can fool you. It looks like a quiet escape for couples, and it is that, but there's a whole layer of genuine family fun here if you dig a little.

Here's where I'd send my own family.

Pillow's Funtrackers: The Crowd-Pleaser

If you have kids between about 5 and 16, you're going to end up at Pillow's Funtrackers on Sudderth Drive whether you plan to or not. Go-karts, mini golf, bumper boats, batting cages: it's the kind of place where you lose two hours without even noticing. The go-karts are the main event. Little ones can ride with an adult, and older kids (54 inches and up) can drive solo.

Mini golf course with colorful obstacles, perfect for a fun family afternoon

Ages: 4 and up for most activities, toddlers can do mini golf
Cost: Pay-per-activity, roughly $6–$10 per ride/game
Season: Open spring through fall, weekends only in shoulder seasons

Get there early on summer weekends. The line for the go-karts can get long by noon.

Grindstone Lake: Easy Hiking Without the Drama

I walk the Grindstone Lake loop more than I probably should admit. It's about 4.2 miles around the whole lake, relatively flat, and shaded by ponderosa pines for most of it. Kids who are old enough to manage a couple hours on foot do great here. For little ones, even a quarter-mile out and back to the water's edge is worth it. The lake is beautiful and the ducks are always willing to put on a show.

Lincoln National Forest pine trails near Ruidoso, great for family hikes

Ages: Any age (strollers can handle the paved sections near the dam)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Cost: Free
Season: Year-round, though snow can make sections slick in winter

Pack snacks and a bag for pine cones. Kids love those pine cones.

Midtown Ice Cream Run

After Grindstone, make the short drive to Midtown. Noisy Water Winery is for the adults, but hit up whatever's scooping ice cream that day along Sudderth Drive. Flavors get creative up here. Pistachio green chile is a real thing and kids will either love it or make the face. Either way, memories made. The walkable strip is easy to navigate with kids, and there are benches everywhere.

Smokey Bear Historical Park: Capitan (20 Minutes Away)

This one surprises families every time. Drive 20 minutes east on Hwy 380 to the tiny town of Capitan and you'll find the actual grave of Smokey Bear, the real one, not the cartoon. The bear that survived a wildfire in Lincoln National Forest in 1950 and became the national symbol of fire prevention. Kids who know the character are always a little blown away that he was a real New Mexico black bear.

The museum is small but genuinely good. Interactive exhibits, the history of the 1950 Capitan Gap fire, and a nice little garden out back. Total visit: 45 minutes to an hour.

Ages: Great for 5 and up
Cost: Around $3–$5 adults, kids free or very cheap
Season: Open year-round

Ruidoso Downs Horse Racing: Summer Only

From late May through Labor Day, Ruidoso Downs Race Track hosts live Quarter Horse racing, including the All American Futurity on Labor Day weekend, one of the richest horse races in the world. Kids can see live racing, the paddock, and occasionally get close enough to the horses that it actually registers as a real experience and not just something on a screen.

Fishing at a calm mountain lake, still water reflecting pines and blue sky

Ages: Best for 6 and up
Cost: General admission is very affordable, usually under $10
Season: Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day

Show up early on a race day and walk the grounds before the crowds settle in. The Futurity weekend in September is electric, so book your cabin way ahead of time.

Inn of the Mountain Gods: Family Activities

The Inn of the Mountain Gods resort on the Mescalero Apache Reservation (about 3 miles from the village) has a full activity desk. In summer you can arrange horseback riding, boat rentals on the resort's lake, and guided fishing. The setting (a mountain lake ringed by peaks) is genuinely one of the most dramatic in New Mexico. Even if you don't stay there, the grounds are accessible to visitors.

Ages: Horseback riding typically ages 7+
Cost: Varies by activity
Season: Summer activities peak June–September

Wildlife from the Deck

This one's free and it's one of my favorites. Ruidoso sits inside Lincoln National Forest, and the wildlife is everywhere once you stop rushing around. From a well-positioned deck you can spot mule deer most mornings, wild turkey through the underbrush, and hummingbirds in summer like you won't believe. Elk come through the area too, especially at dawn and dusk.

Kids who've spent their whole lives in West Texas suburbs genuinely freeze the first time a deer walks through the yard. It's worth building quiet morning time into the itinerary just for this.

Practical Tips for Families

  • Altitude: Ruidoso sits at about 6,900 feet. Kids and adults alike can feel it the first day. Drink more water than you think you need and don't over-schedule day one.
  • Weather: Mountain afternoons can shift fast. Pack a light layer even in July.
  • Groceries: Hit Lowe's Market or Smith's in Ruidoso on your way in. Eating in is way easier with kids and the mountain grocery situation is better than you'd expect.
  • Crowds: Summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) are peak. If you can come mid-week, you'll have shorter lines everywhere.

At 2nd Street Retreat, the deck is the unofficial fifth activity. Kids love spotting deer from it, and it's close enough to everything on this list that you're never more than ten minutes from the next adventure. Sometimes the best family memories happen in between the planned stuff.
